A. Producing reports

The INSTANT steel suite provides a module called Printing for creating reports in simple (text) format and in Microsoft Word document / format. These reports can be customized to contain various selections of structure data and/or analysis results. To start the reports module from the INSTANT steel – Linear3D module, open a project that has been solved and use the command Analysis > Reports. The module INSTANT steel – Printing looks like the image below.

In the INSTANT steel – Printing module now, to create a new report, use the “New” instant-wiki-07-22 icon in the toolbar. Next, save it using the name “MODEL”, by using the “Save” instant-wiki-07-23 icon.

To add content to the current report task, use the instant-wiki-07-25 icon to bring up the “Analysis attributes” dialog. Select from the various available options the ones shown in the following image.

When you will select the Static loading cases check-box, a new dialog will appear where you can select which of the available static loading cases will be included in the report. Use the mouse left click and drag to draw a selection rectangle around all the items that you wish to select. Alternative, you can use the key combinations Shift + click to start a continuous item selection or the Ctrl + click to select individual items. Press OK when you are satisfied with the selection. In this example, we select all available static loading cases as shown below.

After, specifying the information to be included in the report, we must select the items (nodes and beams) for which the program will provide results. Use the tools available in the selection toolbar to select the proper items.

After this procedure, the report “MODEL” has been completely defined. The output of the report can be performed either in simple text form, using the “Plain – text” instant-wiki-07-29 icon, or in a Microsoft Word document using the “MS Word” instant-wiki-07-30 icon. By selecting the “MS Word” icon the following dialog window opens, where we press the OK button.

Selecting the instant-wiki-07-30 icon will bring up the “Text pre-processing” dialog. To generate the “MODEL” report perform the following actions:

  • Select the language in which the report will be created,
  • Select the report task to be generated (MODEL) from the “Job list” table and use the “Prepare task” button to transfer it to the “Job List for DOC” table,
  • Select the MODEL report in the “Job List for DOC” table,
  • Press the “Create Word DOC” button.

Note: In order to successfully generate a Word document report, the Word macros security level must be set to either Medium or Low. To change this setting in the Word use the menu Tools > Options > Security > Macro security.

B. Use of reports to identify worst elements for member design

Using the same method – procedure as described above we can create a report that will include results of selected nodes / beams in order to include the results in our detailed report. In addition, the usage of the reports can contribute in another way. We can use the “Report” tool to identify which nodes / beams sustain the maximum Internal forces in order to minimize the Member design of the elements to only the members that sustain the maximum Internal forces.

For example, in this case the number of total columns is equal to twenty two (22). In our Final report its not practical to use the member design of all 22 column members in order to minimize the printing pages of our report. As a result, in our final report will be included only the members that sustain the maximum forces. This will be derived using the following procedure:

We will create a new report by selecting “New” instant-wiki-07-22 icon. In the created new report select all the columns of the examined structure.

Next, press the “Results” instant-wiki-07-38 icon, and the dialog window “Results” will show up. In this dialog window select the summary “Beam results” static forces for all the previously specified members as shown below.

We are saving the new report task with the same way as described in the previous chapter, giving the name “columns”.

instant-wiki-07-41

In order to create the outputs of the report press the “MS Word” instant-wiki-07-30 icon. Using the same procedure as described above we will have the following:

instant-wiki-07-44

In the report that will appear the user can observe the maximum and minimum internal forces values that the selected column members sustain, as shown below:

instant-wiki-07-45

From the above table we can observe the following:

  • The maximum compressive force is 137 kN for Beam number 49. The specified value is created in the ULS02 combination.
  • The maximum tension force is equal to 41.6 kN for Beam number 52 and the specified value is created from the Wind X static loading case.
  • The maximum shear force value for the Y axis is equal to 91 kN for Beam 141.
  • The maximum shear force value for the Z axis is equal to 5.44 kN for Beam 121.
  • The maximum rotational bending moment value is equal to 0.104 kNm for Beam 24.
  • The minimum rotational bending moment values is equal to -0.108 kNm for Beam 241.
  • The maximum bending moment value for the weak axis Y is equal to 2.48 kNm for Beam 242.
  • The minimum bending moment value for the weak axis Y is equal to -2.48 kNm for Beam 23.
  • The maximum bending moment value for the strong axis Z is equal to 311 kNm for Beam 141.
  • The minimum bending moment value for the strong axis Z is equal to -235 kNm for Beam 144.

The next step is to locate the beams with the worst internal forces in the topology of our structure so that we will be able to identify the appropriate column. Using the “Locate” instant-wiki-07-46 icon, the following dialog window will open.

instant-wiki-07-47

By entering in the above window the Beam number 49 we can identify the column topology that the maximum compressive force is developed.

instant-wiki-07-48

We observe that beam number 49 is the third column from the left hand-side of the structure. In a similar way we will locate the rest of the beams in order to identify the column members that will be checked in the member design.

Note: We are using the same procedure to identify the rest of the worst member categories, such as rafters, purlins, rails, front columns, wind bracings.
