4. Objective of working example

The objective of this working example is to analyze and dimension a steel frame structure with the following data:

  • Width L = 24 m
  • Column height H1 = 6 m
  • Rafter height H2 = 8,5 m
  • Distance between frames B = 5 m
  • Number of frames n = 11

Columns and rafters are connected with purlins and rails. The frame structure is out of steel and foundation out of reinforced concrete bases. In the linear model above are shown the position and the type of frame and roof bracings. All the steel members are standard steel sections with S275 quality.

The structure analysis will consist of the following steps:

  • Definition of the structure topology
  • Application of materials and sections
  • Definition of beam releases and support conditions
  • Application of permanent loads, from snow and wind (static loading cases), as well as a seismic load (spectral calculation)
  • Static calculation and creation of load combinations corresponding to Ultimate Limit State (ULS) and Serviceability Limit States (SLS)
  • Visualization of results (beam internal forces, reactions and node displacements)
  • Generation of analysis report containing the structure data and the static analysis results
  • Design of structural members conforming to the Eurocode 3 norm
  • Design of connections conforming to Eurocode 3 norm
